Bismarck, N.D. –The North Dakota Ethics Commission is pleased to announce the appointment of Lisa Edison‑Smith as its newest Commissioner. A nationally recognized attorney and expert in labor and employment law, Ms. Edison‑Smith brings a strong legal background and decades of professional experience to the Commission. She was appointed on July 7, 2026, to fill the unexpired term of Commissioner Ronald Goodman who announced his intention to retire last month.

Edison‑Smith is an attorney with Vogel Law Firm where she specializes in employment and labor law. She plans to retire from her legal practice at the end of the year. In addition to her legal work, Edison‑Smith serves as an editor of the North Dakota Employment Law Letter, a monthly publication that provides guidance to employers across the state.

Edison-Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration from North Dakota State University and a law degree from Hamline University School of Law. Earlier in her career, she served as a law clerk to Chief Justice A.M. Keith of the Minnesota Supreme Court and spent more than eight years in finance and accounting roles with GTE Corporation.

Chairwoman Pamela Sharp said, “The Commission is excited to welcome Ms. Edison-Smith and looks forward to the experience, independent perspective, and strong work ethic she brings to the Commission. Commissioner Edison-Smith will play an important role in preserving the Commission’s independent voice and advancing its work on behalf of the people of North Dakota.”

Upon accepting her appointment, Ms. Edison‑Smith said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to bring my legal experience and problem-solving skills to the important work of the Commission. Together, I believe we can improve public trust and deepen the Commission’s commitment to accountability and transparency in North Dakota.”

Commissioners are appointed by consensus agreement of the governor, the majority leader of the senate, and the minority leader of the senate. The Commission extends its sincere thanks to Governor Armstrong, Majority Leader Hogue, and Minority Leader Hogan for appointing Ms. Edison-Smith.
